Growing up in a bustling urban environment, she discovered her passion for food and pursued it with determination. Starting as a cook and apprentice under an Executive Chef at Resorts World Manila, she honed her culinary skills in the demanding world of fine dining. The experience was both rigorous and rewarding, shaping her into a resilient professional prepared to take on the world.

Her journey, however, was not without challenges. The passing of her mother marked a turning point. “After my mom passed away, I felt this deep urge to explore Europe and start anew,” Sheryll recalled. With encouragement from friends who had ventured abroad, she applied for an opportunity in Finland through an agency, setting the stage for a life-changing move.

First Steps in Finland

Moving to Finland was an emotional rollercoaster, marked by culture shock and excitement. She found herself in Turku, a serene and picturesque city far removed from the fast-paced life of Manila. “Turku is so laid-back, almost like time slows down here,” she reflected.

Adjusting to Finnish culture wasn’t easy, but it was enriching. The discipline, punctuality, and integrity ingrained in Finnish society resonated deeply with her, offering lessons she quickly embraced.

During the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sheryll’s life took an unexpected romantic turn. She met her Finnish husband, Tuomo, on a dating platform, where their connection grew naturally. “We started as friends, exchanging messages, and eventually fell in love,” she shared warmly.

Despite the challenges of dating during a global crisis, their relationship flourished. Together, they’ve built a life grounded in love, respect, and adaptability. Language barriers with her husband’s family present occasional hurdles, but Sheryll’s optimistic outlook helps bridge those gaps. Their growing family is a testament to their resilience and shared commitment.

Blending Filipino and Finnish Traditions

As a mother, Sheryll is passionate about raising her child in a multicultural environment. From her Filipino heritage, she instills respect for elders and a deep sense of family. Finnish traditions, meanwhile, naturally weave into her child’s life through daily experiences and education.

“Everything about raising our child feels rewarding,” she said, reflecting on the joy and fulfillment her family brings.

Building meaningful connections takes time, but she remains committed to showcasing the Filipino spirit wherever she goes. “I miss the innate warmth and care Filipinos show each other,” she admitted, carrying that spirit forward in her interactions.

Looking ahead, she envisions a future where she continues to thrive in Finland while honoring her roots. Her advice to Filipinos considering a move abroad? “Bring the joy of the Philippines with you. If it’s more fun in the Philippines, why not make it fun wherever you are?”
