Demonstrative Pronouns

Demonstrative pronouns are words used to point out specific people, objects, or places. In Finnish, they indicate proximity (near or far) and number (singular or plural).

Case	This	That	It	These	Those	They
Nominative	Tämä Tämä on talo. This is a house.	Tuo Tuo on puu. That is a tree.	Se Se on auto. It is a car.	Nämä Nämä ovat ystäviä. These are friends.	Nuo Nuo ovat kirjoja. Those are books.	Ne Ne ovat hyviä. They are good.
Stem	Tä- Tästä alkaa matka. From this begins the journey.	Tuo- Tuosta syystä lähdin. For that reason I left.	Si- Siihen liittyy ongelma. It relates to the problem.	Näi- Näistä syistä opin. For these reasons I learned.	Noi- Noista kirjoista pidän. I like those books.	Nii- Niihin asioihin keskityn. I focus on those things.
Partitive	Tätä Haluan tätä. I want this.	Tuota Katso tuota. Look at that.	Sitä Tarvitsen sitä. I need it.	Näitä Ostan näitä. I am buying these.	Noita Muistan noita. I remember those.	Niitä Rakastan niitä. I love them.
Genitive	Tämän Tämän kirjan luin. I read this book.	Tuon Tuon oven suljin. I closed that door.	Sen Sen nimen tiedän. I know its name.	Näiden Näiden lasten kanssa leikin. I play with these children.	Noiden Noiden talojen väri on kaunis. The color of those houses is beautiful.	Niiden Niiden koirien nimet ovat hauskoja. The names of those dogs are funny.
Illative	Tähän Menen tähän taloon. I go into this house.	Tuohon Istun tuohon tuoliin. I sit on that chair.	Siihen Jään siihen paikkaan. I stay in that place.	Näihin Laitan kirjat näihin hyllyihin. Inessive	Tässä Asun tässä talossa. I live in this house.	Tuossa Auto on tuossa pihassa. The car is in that yard.	Siinä Siinä kirjassa on kuvia. That book has pictures. Elative	Tästä Pidän tästä kirjasta. I like this book.	Tuosta Kerro tuosta asiasta. Tell me about that matter.	Siitä Puhuin siitä. I talked about it.	Näistä Näistä kuvista pidän. I like these pictures.	Noista Opin noista kirjoista. I learned from those books.	Niistä Kuulin niistä uutisista. I heard about those news.
Allative	Tälle Annoin tämän lahjan tälle lapselle. I gave this gift to this child.	Tuolle Kirjoita tuolle paperille. Write on that paper.	Sille Annoin sille koiralle ruokaa. I gave food to that dog.	Näille Opetan näille lapsille. I teach these children.	Noille Lahjat kuuluvat noille opiskelijoille. The gifts belong to those students.	Niille Kerroin niille ihmisille. I told those people.
Adessive	Tällä Olen tällä kadulla. I am on this street.	Tuolla Tapaamme tuolla torilla. We meet at that market.	Sillä Hän matkustaa sillä bussilla. He travels on that bus.
